We started with a family group.

Then moved onto the important task of Jedi warfare.

Next up, some running along favourite paths and scooter action.

The games don’t stop: girls versus boys in trying to get to the other side of the square without being caught.

A hill means running, if you’re a small boy.

I last saw Peter and Amanda several years ago when their son Henry was a baby. Now they have baby Sasha and Henry is very much a young man, seriously interested in sticks, transformers and investigating locked gates. We got together this morning before his school sports day in Dulwich, taking some relaxed family group photos. Children are usually a delight to photograph anyway, but when they are playing and cuddling with the rest of their family, it’s really special. I often wonder how treasured those photographs will be in the future for the children themselves.

Now he’s running around with a Nintendo game … and it was his sister Thea’s turn this week on HER first birthday. What’s amazing is how similar they look at the same age.

Wedding clients Gemma and Matt from 2006 have added baby Henry to their lives – and after a maternity portrait session during Gemma’s pregnancy, I was able to capture the next stage in their lives together – Henry’s Christening. They chose Mothers Day for his Christening at St James’ in Twickenham, attended by family and friends. I took a selection of photos to commemorate the day: some of Henry getting ready, on our way to the church, the Christening itself and the reception at Arthur’s Restaurant on the Green.

I’ve just returned from a short break with family which included visiting my three-day-old niece in Gloucestershire, the daughter of my sister Kirsty. She is yet to be named, but since her grandma was visiting from Australia, there were some official portraits taken with daddy Blair and big sister Matilda Rose. I especially love the photographs of Matilda and the new arrival because my earliest memories were of meeting Kirsty, who is 3.5 years younger, wrapped in a similar cotton baby blanket when she arrived home from hospital.

I photographed Emma and Tim’s wedding six years ago in June. They’re the loveliest couple and we’ve stayed in touch since we lived in Limehouse/Wapping and now I’m in Greenwich and they’re in Herne Hill. We met last week for a portrait session with their daughter Beatrice who is about three months old. They’d just returned from 10 days in Venice, where they had honeymooned – and apparently Beatrice was welcomed with open arms across the city by beaming residents, wherever they went.

And Beatrice is very, very cute, especially in this family chair.

And we had some portraits of Emma and Beatrice together, athough missed out on portraits with dad, as tiredness had set in. But that did give me a chance to see Emma & Tim’s photographs from Venice – stored on a lovely wireless server – showing what an IT whizz Tim really is, as well as a reminder of when I went there about a year ago.

The last couple of weeks have been busy – mostly taken up with my niece Tilly visiting London for five days. We’ve had a ball – the V&A Museum was brilliantly set up for children. On the day we went, they had badge-making and you can borrow activity back-packs on various themes; we tried two – one on glass and another on organising a party in ancient China. We found the architecture gallery on the way to the glass gallery, including a short film on the building of the Swiss Re building – or Gherkin. Since we had already been Gherkin-spotting earlier in the week (usually to make our time on public transport pass by more quickly), this was a bonus.

The V&A also has a paddling pool in the square in the middle, with a very civilised lunch and coffee place – so I could chill with a latte while Tilly dashed in and out of the water. We also had a quick trip to the Natural History Museum, to see the dinosaurs and the blue whale. This was especially fun as there is a huge whale in our bedtime reading “The Bad-Tempered Ladybird”.

An interactive exhibition at the Livesey Museum on Old Kent Road on the numbers 1-12 was also good for a couple of hours. There was a great pretend shop where you could ‘buy’ hairy spiders, string knots and scorpions – complete with till. A game of table football was probably our favourite thing, although not sure what it has to do with numbers.

When Tilly left, I realised that I don’t have many photographs of my family around, so have just ordered portraits of her and my sister Kirsty for the lounge, as well as a large canvas of a landscape that has very happy memories for me, to go over the sofa. Much as I love the painting that is already there, it’s really too small for the space and will fit in well in the bedroom.

Below is a portrait of Kirsty when we were playing around in the studio with her favourite hats.

And this is Tilly, wrapped in some of the material I recently bought for portraits. The idea was to have it around for some maternity portraits, but realised that it’s great for children as well – and could be used for mother and child portraits.

And this is the landscape, taken with friends in Southwold on a blustery day with long walks on the beach, bluebell woods and involving bacon sandwiches.

I’ve been in a nursery for the past two days, photographing about 30 children. One of the two-year-olds looked at me yesterday and commented that I had big boobs and she had little ones. I explained that I was a “big woman”, hence the “big boobs”. She then concluded that she was a little woman to match hers – and that was that. Actually, it was flattering that she was comparing us – she has the looks of Kirstie Allsopp and is a natural fashionista, wearing a LBD with long brown socks in the morning, and then later outside a deep red fur-trimmed coat with purple witch’s hat.

Later in the day, the pre-schoolers were sitting at a table, passing around a dinosaur toy before hearing a dinosaur story. They were encouraged to feel its softness and give it a hug before the story started, then asked what name it should have. Instantly, one of them answered “Linda”, as if all dinosaurs were called that. I guess that was that too. Perhaps they could be asked for the answer to life, the universe and everything – they’d probably have better answers than I ever do.

I love it when parents have their children photographed regularly. It means that when their children are grown up, they’ll have a full record of them developing and eventually, those photographs will pass onto their family. One client, Aoifinn, booked me about two years ago for her two girls and their first session. We were going to use a park but found a cute cobbled lane instead. Now the girls have a baby sister and I’ve captured them at a birthday party and now at Magdalen College, Oxford, where Aoifinn has been studying. And if you’re wondering how a tiny girl barely able to walk manages to balance on a window sill, Aoifinn was crouching behind holding her up. I can’t wait for the next shoot.
